Cody Yourbrough is one of the huge reasons Spidertron is so good. As editor and assistant director Cody turned a mess of amateurs fumbling through scenes, into an honest to god feature film! It’s no surprise to anyone who’s worked with him that he’s finally getting the respect of the “real” film industry. We are happy to congratulate him on his Cinequest Film Festival award!

Below is his announcement

I’m happy to report that my screenplay “Freefall” has just won the

Bronze prize at the 2009 Cinequest Film Festival. I was chosen as one

of 10 finalists out of a field of almost 700 script submissions. After

four rounds of elimination, the script (formerly “The Juno Incident”)

was selected for the third prize. I win two face to face script

consultations with UCLA screen writing gurus Hal Ackerman and Richard

Walter, worth a whopping $647,000 (according to Ackerman, anyway). And

a signed copy of each of their books.

In addition, all the parties, films and events at Cinequest gave me

the opportunity to meet and greet with literally hundreds of energetic

and exciting filmmakers at every level from student directors to Oscar

winners. I saw dozens of fantastic features and shorts made by these

people and had the pleasure to ask and answer questions with most of

them. The hosts were amazing, and the film fest was a fantastic

community event, drawing better than 80,000 film fans from San Jose

and the bay area over the course of the festival.

I am of course entirely overjoyed, and happy to hit the ground running

to meet, greet, and market. The first solicitations are already coming

in, and things are all getting very exciting. The finalists were feted

at a personal reception with Diablo Cody (Juno), Hal Ackerman, Richard

Walter, Felicia Henderson (Fringe, Gossip Girl & Everybody Hates

Chris), James Dalessandro (1906), Scott Kosar (The Machinist), and

others, including 12 estimable final round judges and festival

organizers.

Everyone was amazingly supportive and encouraging, and my gratitude

for the honor could scarcely be greater.

Holy Jeezus of Zarstron! Spidertron has been nominated for an award in the Cottage Grove Regional Film Festival, two awards in fact! James Kiser, the director of the festival, called last night to let us know we were nominated for “Best Cinematography”, and “Best Picture”! This is the first Cottage Grove Film Festival. Organizers are hoping to make this an annual event, so this could make Spidertron historic, as the first “Best Picture”. There will also be a question and answer session with the cast and crew (we love to talk about Spidertron) after it shows at around 7:00 pm on Saturday (see the schedule attached). Following the Q&A, there will be an awards presentation. We’d love to see you all there! More information and ticket prices are in the schedule.

The exciting second episode of the sci-fi extravaganza, Spidertron! Last week, we learned the fate of the daring crew of the Tiger Shark- all hands lost in a tragic crash- or are they? Who just barged into Hack’s apartment without knoking? What is NELBox hiding? Why are they hiding it? Where are they hiding it… er…

more to the point, in this episode there are GIANT EXPLOSIONS and lots of YELLING!

It was a big week for Spidertron. Carter and I went to Radcon in Pasco WA, to show Spidertron in the Radcon Fan Film Festival. We were a non competing entry (due to length), but did get the privilege of participating in a couple of Q&A’s with other film makers and fans.

We met Damon Wellner, Sebastian O’Brien, and Carla Remy Norton of Probot Productions who were kind enough to give us a copy of Aliens 5(squared), a spoof of several Aliens movies staring action figures! They also happen to be nerdfamous for “STAR WARS A New Hope in 3 minutes” (action figures again, go figure [ha!]). Besides being adept film makers they were quite friendly.

Vexor Conquered the Nerds in the Radcon Grand Masquerade Costume Contest! We won for Best Original Costume! I received a certificate in pirate-speak, and a ring-juggling harlequin brooch! Video is on the way!

Convention attendees were notably impressed by Vexor’s costume, and made many positive and suggestive comments. Particularly interested, were the guys smoking under the tree on the corner 30 feet from where I was changing into costume in the car. (Vexor demands a green room next time! No! A trailer!) Seeing as how my wife was in the car with me, I’m sure they were looking forward to some intergalactic action when I took off my pants and pulled out the hand-cuffs. But they were duly impressed when I pulled the floor mats over my head, and thew the shower curtain on my back.

In other news. Spidertron is now available at Emerald City Comics in Eugene (770 East 13th Avenue [Above Rainbow Optics]). Stu, the generous guy that he is, is allowing us to offer it at the low-low-low-low price of $10.00. He may even have a copy for rent. Ask if you don’t see it.
